At HD Tuning, we recently had the opportunity to work on a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe with the 2.2L D4EB engine and were able to achieve some impressive results. In this blog post, we’ll discuss the benefits of a dyno tune and share the details of our work on this vehicle.

Custom Dyno Tuning

First, let’s take a look at the vehicle and the work we carried out. To improve the vehicle’s performance, we carried out a custom dyno tune using our state-of-the-art equipment and experienced technicians.

A dyno tune involves running a vehicle on a dynamometer, which measures its power output and other key metrics. By adjusting the vehicle’s engine management software, fuel mapping, and other settings, a skilled technician can optimize the vehicle’s performance, increase its power and torque output, and also improve fuel economy.

When we first tested the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe on the dyno, we found that it was only producing 98Hp and 292Nm of torque. These figures were well below the factory output. This is not uncommon, as many vehicles are set up with conservative factory settings to account for a variety of driving conditions and other factors including driveline losses and current vehicle condition/health.

After carrying out our custom dyno tune on the Hyundai Santa Fe, we were able to achieve some impressive results. The power output increased from 98Hp to 122Hp, while the torque output increased from 292Nm to 335Nm. This represents a significant improvement over the stock figures and can be felt immediately on the road.

It’s important to note that the power and torque figures we’ve discussed so far are measured at the wheels. However, it’s also useful to understand the concept of flywheel power and torque. This refers to the power and torque output at the engine itself, before any losses due to the drivetrain and other factors.

Consequently, we seen a massive 24% increase in power and 15% increase in torque. Perfect for what this customer was after and they will also see improved fuel economy. Correspondingly, we can see the estimated flywheel figures after tuning is 187Hp and 505Nm from the flywheel.

One factor to keep in mind when considering power and torque figures is driveline losses. This refers to the amount of power and torque that is lost as the engine’s output is transmitted through the drivetrain and other components of the vehicle. Depending on the vehicle and other factors, driveline losses can range from 10% to 20% or more. In this case we have seen a huge 51-53% driveline loss compared to factory figures.
