Flywheel Estimate and Driveline Losses: Unraveling the Mysteries with HD Tuning

Understanding True Performance Gains

At HD Tuning, we understand that the essence of vehicle performance lies in the details. In this comprehensive guide, we’re taking a closer look at flywheel power and driveline losses – key factors that significantly influence your vehicle’s efficiency and performance.

Engine, Flywheel Estimate and driveline losses

Understanding Flywheel Power

Flywheel power, or engine power, is the power output measured at the engine’s flywheel. This figure is crucial as it represents the total power generated by the engine before any losses occur in the drivetrain. To truly appreciate your vehicle’s capabilities, understanding flywheel power is essential. Learn more about our approach to engine tuning. This is the approach manufacturers take when broadcasting the power of specific vehicles. Take a look at the specs for the for yourself here.

Decoding Driveline Losses

Driveline losses occur as power travels from the engine to the wheels, diminished by components like the gearbox and differential. These losses vary based on vehicle type and transmission efficiency. Accurately assessing these losses is vital for a realistic performance evaluation.

To estimate flywheel power from wheel power, we need to factor in the driveline losses. This is often done using a percentage, which can vary but is typically around 15-20% for most vehicles. For instance, if a vehicle shows 200 HP at the wheels, and we estimate driveline losses at 20%, the flywheel power would be approximately 250 HP.

An Example of Post Tuning Flywheel Calculations

To estimate these losses, we start with the factory flywheel rating and compare it to actual power figures measured at the wheels. For example, if a vehicle like the Isuzu NPS 75-155 is rated at 155 HP at the flywheel by the manufacturer (Take a look at the specs for the for yourself here), and we measure, say, 115 HP at the wheels, we can infer the driveline losses. Assuming the factory rating is accurate, the difference of 40 HP (155 HP – 115 HP) represents the power lost through the drivetrain.

Now, let’s apply this to post-tuning calculations. After performing a custom dyno tune, we measure the new wheel power. Suppose the dyno shows an increase to 165 HP at the wheels. To estimate the new flywheel power, we use our previously calculated driveline loss percentage. If we initially estimated a 25% loss (40 HP loss on 155 HP is approximately 25%), we can apply this to our new wheel power figure.

To calculate the estimated post-tuning flywheel power, we divide the wheel power by 1 minus the loss percentage. In our example, it would be 165 HP / (1 – 0.25), which equals approximately 220 HP. This figure represents our estimated flywheel power after the custom dyno tune.

Case Study: The Hino 500 Transformation

One of our standout projects involved a 2018 Hino 500. Post-tuning, this vehicle showed remarkable performance improvements. By calculating the estimated flywheel power, we could quantify the true extent of these enhancements. Dive into this case study here. Take a look at the Hino 500 specs sheet here.
