At HD Tuning, we pride ourselves on maximizing the performance of every vehicle that comes through our doors. Recently, we had the pleasure of working on a 2012 Toyota Hilux equipped with the 1KD-FTV engine and automatic transmission. The goal? To unlock more power, increase torque, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance overall durability. The results were nothing short of impressive.
Before diving into the tuning process, our experienced technicians conducted a thorough pre-dyno health check before heading to the dyno.
This step is crucial in ensuring that the vehicle is in top mechanical condition, ready to handle the increased performance we’re about to unleash.
A comprehensive inspection includes checking the engine’s health, fluid levels, and overall system integrity to ensure everything is functioning as it should. This step is essential to avoid any potential issues during the tuning process and to ensure the modifications will be both effective and safe.
Once the Hilux passed the pre-dyno inspection, we proceeded to establish the vehicle’s baseline performance. Using our state-of-the-art Dyno Dynamics Bogey Drive Truck Dyno, we measured the power output directly at the wheels, which provides us a more accurate reflection of real world performance than the manufacturer’s flywheel figures.

These figures represent the Hilux’s factory performance giving us a clear starting point for our tuning process.
With the baseline figures in hand, our technicians got to work on the custom tune. The tuning process involves writing multiple custom files to the ECU, followed by rigorous testing and fine-tuning to achieve the desired results.
It’s a detailed process that requires both expertise and precision to ensure that every adjustment brings out the best in vehicle’s performance.
After a day of file revisions, testing, and adjustments, we achieved the following results:
POWER: 153.5Hp
TORQUE: 320.8
These gains represent a significant improvement in the Hilux’s performance, translating to stronger acceleration, better pulling power, and enhanced fuel efficiency.
So, what do these numbers mean for the everyday driver? The increased power and torque make the Hilux more capable, especially when towing or driving on challenging terrain. The improved drivability also means smoother power delivery and a more responsive throttle, making daily driving more enjoyable.
