At HD Tuning, we recently had the opportunity to work on a Scania R620, a powerful truck known for its exceptional performance and reliability. Our goal was to maximize its potential with a custom dyno tune, and the results were impressive!
Before we dive into the tuning process, it’s essential to understand he vehicle’s baseline performance. The 2019 Scania R620 was tested on our state-of-the-art dyno, which measures power output directly at the wheels. This method provides an accurate reflection of real-world performance, as it accounts for power losses that occur through the drivetrain.
When a vehicle is tested on a dyno, the power measured at the wheels (also known as “wheel horsepower” or WHP) is often lower than the manufacturer’s advertised flywheel horsepower. This discrepancy is due to the driveline losses, which occur as power is transferred from the engine through the transmission, driveshaft, differential, and finally to the wheels. These losses can range from 15% to 25%, depending on the drivetrain configuration and the condition of the components. By measuring WHP, we can provide a more realistic assessment of a vehicle’s on-road capabilities.
Our custom dyno tuning process involves a thorough examination of the vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) settings. Our experienced technicians adjust the ECU parameters to optimize power and torque output, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance overall drivability.
